Since June 2019 I moved with my group as a senior scientist to the Swiss Institute of Snow, Forest and Landscape (WSL), while keeping my laboratory and teaching activities at ETH Zurich. The position is a joint position between WSL and the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag) to promote novel, interdisciplinary work. My previous position was an SNSF Professorship of Environmental Fluid Mechanics at ETH Zurich, which has allowed me to establish a strong research group at the frontier of environmental flows and transport, tackling interdisciplinary issues related to aquatic ecosystems that span traditional subject boundaries of engineering, biology and chemistry. My background is in turbulence, with key research on turbulent entrainment (main PhD paper: Holzner et al. JFM 2008), interfaces (Holzner and Lüthi PRL 2011) and transition to turbulence (Samanta et al. PNAS 2013), and with the establishment of my SNSF Chair I have moved from a more fundamental approach to the study of environmental fluid flows and transport with a focus on biophysical couplings and ecotoxicology. I have published 70 ISI papers and my funding portfolio has allowed me to establish new lines of investigation on flow-biota interactions and biomedical flow. This research has been extremely rewarding, with pioneering work on organisms exposed to environmental and anthropogenic stressors, and disturbed blood flow in the cardiovascular system. Since 2013 I lead a strong, dynamic and committed group of young scientists which has produced some very novel research on zooplankton behaviour in turbulence, toxicity of nanoparticles, organism exposure assays and resistance of benthic organisms to drift. We have pioneered the novel combination of zooplankton behaviour analysis based on high-speed imaging with advanced physical modelling.
